5 Major Problems with Splinterlands Tournaments#930

F

5 Major Problems with Tournaments and why new players are having bad experiances, in order.

#1: The world champion will be there, and he will kick your ass.

Notes: Like any other tournament; MTG, Chess, Boxing. you might think you’ve got splinterlands down, but you would be naive to think you can take down the world champ. Any tournament with decent prizes you can only bet on the 2 things listed in the title of this point.

#2: Prize splitting

Notes: Another thing that catch newbies out is splinterlands Avant-guard approach to prizes. unlike literally every other competitive game; Pokémon, MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh. Splinterlands has made the unusual decision to split peoples rewards based solely on wins and losses, completely ignoring tiebreakers. I actually asked support about this and was told it “helps new players survive” well, given point #1 the only realistic prize you should be aiming for as a new player is top 16 or top 32 and when this reward is slashed to spread a pittance of petty cash amongst the new tournament players the only thing they can afford is to pay the next tournament fee if they fancy banging their head against the wall. please stop this nonsense and give us a prize worth caring about.

#3: Unfair advantage: entering the tournament multiple times.

Notes: it is well known and also openly allowed that you can; enter the tournament multiple times. Hey! do you remember point one? well multiply that by 2 or 3. To win a tournament in splinterlands it’s going to take a lot more than beating the world champion (as if that wasn’t hard enough) if you do, you will also need to beat him again on his alt account and potentially his alt’s alt account, not only does he have every card in the game, so does his alt accounts and since he’s got years of experience you can expect to be thoroughly out skilled, outgunned and basically just out of luck.

#4: Unfair Advantage: Bots and Large data pools

Notes: another insurmountable challenge for anyone who dares to enter a tournament with a decent prize pool is the fact that they will be 1 man, with his quick decision making skill. unlike in every other competitive tournament: CS:GO, Chess, Boxing, MTG. the world champion also has large data pools (like a chess engine) that show the optimal play for each rule set and mana allowance. unlike you, he will be able to cross reference his selection (if he even does it himself) with the data sets and correct any errors before submitting his team. and if you think you can look at his collection and see what he might play? think again. scripts will allow him to submit all 11 of his battles in less than a few minutes.

#5: Unfair Advantage: experience and card collection

Notes: This is least important aspect of tournaments and for some tournaments, having a large deck and a lot of experience is absolutely fine, just like MTG the players with the best cards and most experience are the best players but given issues #1-4, if there is no change to no’s #1-#4 I think this could be something to take into account. Again, let me be clear, IF this was the only issue, there would be no issue. In the interim whilst issues #1-4 exist it would be nice to add more formats, such as; double elimination or round robin to tournaments. a draft format would also be awesome and would be fresh with some things like large data pools rendered useless.

Conclusion: I am in the process of filling a spreadsheet with data to answer the question “are tournaments worth it for new players” and I can anticipate the results already. They are not. Splinterlands has litany of issues that cannot easily be addressed due to the anonymity and crypto ethos in the space. Splinterlands doesnt want to do KYC, or ban bots, or really do anything that moves it in line with everything else and if this is case fine. Call a spade a spade, tournaments are not for aspiring champs, new players or even guys like me with over 1 years’ experience and a substantial collection. These “tournaments” are just a way to add value to the pockets of the OG’s, the big wigs, the founders and to be honest. I can respect that too.

a whole lot of anonymous users are about to come and conjure up hell for you. the truth is not welcome, but luckily we are not in discord here, where the people with high ranks use all the exploits and also defend them constantly……

quite striking that these anonymous people who are against it here at feedbacks, create accounts especially for it, because they know they are a very small minority. actually, everyone should realize what disgusting characters these people have who defend this, that they will soon have the most voting rights, makes me already afraid!

In summary, someone who has more capital > someone who doesn’t have the same amount of capital = unfair advantage.
